Board sets 2008-09 school calendar

At Thursday night’s school board meeting, the board voted to approve a calendar that calls for school to start on Aug. 27, 2008, finish on June 9, 2009, and maintain the five-day Thanksgiving break.

Board president Dr. Mark Morris thanked the community for its active participation in the discussion about the calendar, but noted it would be impossible to find a calendar that would satisfy the needs of everyone.

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING TEST OF AUTOMATIC PHONE SYSTEM

On Thursday, Dec. 6 and Friday, Dec. 7, we tested a new “Rapid Notification System.” We will be using this new system, which can make up to 10,000 phone calls within one hour, to alert parents of students, as well as the district’s employees, about any unplanned schedule changes.

These will usually be situations related to weather, which can result in opening delays, early releases, school closings, etc.

Thursday’s test was sent to the phone number(s) we have listed in our records for the primary contact (usually the parents).  The primary contact may have up to three phone numbers listed (home, office, cell) and the system will call all three.

Messages to advise that school will be canceled, because of weather conditions, will be sent only to the primary contact's phone number(s).

However, unplanned schedule changes that occur on shorter notice, such as early releases due to developing bad weather, will be sent to all phone numbers we have on record for a student. This includes all emergency and secondary contacts, such as a grandparent,  neighbor, friend or relative. This is to ensure that a child is safely cared for if he or she is released from school early with very little advance notice.

Friday’s test message, the second and final test, was sent to all phone numbers we have on record for a student, including emergency and secondary contacts. If you received a phone test message Friday night, and you are not a parent of a Fairfield school student, it is because your phone number has been listed as an emergency or secondary contact by the parent of a Fairfield school student.

If you successfully receive those test messages, at the phone numbers at which you wish to receive them, you do not need to do anything.

However, if you wish to change any of these phone numbers, please contact the office where your child goes to school. They will assist you in changing the information on our records.

Thank you for your attention to this information.

FAIRFIELD'S NEWEST NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHER

Congratulations to Jennifer Hoffman, a teacher at the Kindergarten Center, who has achieved National Board Certification. She has been teaching for 13 years, and has been at Fairfield since 2001.

National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize and reward great teachers—and make them better. The teachers have to demonstrate advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices. Certification is achieved through a rigorous, performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete.

As part of the process, teachers build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, videotapes and a thorough analysis of their classroom teaching.

National Board Certification is awarded by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Homestead Exemption and Property Tax Rollback

Real estate Property Tax Rollback and Homestead exemptions are forms of property tax relief. Every property taxpayer receives the 10 percent tax rollback. This became law several years ago with the enactment of the state income tax.

The Auditor's Office also administers the two-and-a-half percent Property Tax Reduction Law passed in 1979 for residential and agricultural parcels on which there is a homesite occupied by the owner. In addition, senior citizens and the permanently disabled are eligible to receive the Homestead Exemptions (reduction in real estate taxes) provided their annual income is $23,000 or less.

Applications for the Homestead Exemption are available online or at the Auditor's Office, 130 High St., fourth floor, Hamilton, Ohio 45011.

Manufactured homes are also included in this Homestead program. Manufactured homeowners must obtain a homestead exemption application specific to manufactured homes; this application
is available at the Mobile Home Division, Butler County Auditor's Office, 5617 Liberty Fairfield Road, Hamilton, Ohio 45011. You may contact the Liberty Fairfield office at 513-887-3158. Map
